Acupuncture

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) therapy that involves inserting thin needles into specific points on the body.

Traditional Chinese medicine is based on the idea that an energy force called qi (pronounced "chee") flows through the body along pathways called meridians. Acupuncture is thought to help restore the balance of qi and unblock any meridians that are obstructed.

Scientific understanding of how acupuncture works:

  • Stimulates the nervous system, leading to the release of chemicals like endorphins, which have pain-relieving properties.

  • Acupuncture improves the body's immune system and blood flow.

What can be acupuncture be used for?

Here are some conditions where acupuncture might be used:

  • Pain Management: Acupuncture can be helpful in managing pain associated with various neurological conditions, including:

    • Migraine and headaches: Studies have shown that acupuncture can be as effective as some medications in preventing migraines and reducing headache frequency.

    • Neuropathic pain: This type of pain arises from damage to the nerves and can be caused by conditions like diabetes, shingles, and post-herpetic neuralgia. Acupuncture may help alleviate neuropathic pain by stimulating the release of endorphins, the body's natural painkillers.

    • Low back pain: Acupuncture can be a complementary treatment for low back pain, especially when combined with other conventional therapies.

  • Stroke Rehabilitation: Acupuncture may aid in improving motor function and reducing spasticity (muscle stiffness) after a stroke.

  • Parkinson's Disease: Some studies suggest that acupuncture may help improve symptoms of Parkinson's disease, such as tremors, stiffness, and pain.

  • Bell's Palsy: This condition causes facial paralysis. Acupuncture may help speed up recovery in people with Bell's palsy.
